How much does it cost to hire a hacker on the dark web

The Dark Web is home to a smorgasbord of illegal and criminal products and services for sale. And that certainly includes the area of cybercrime. From website hacking to DDoS attacks to custom malware to changing school grades, you can purchase one of these services from a rented hacker. But how much do these types of items cost?

A blog post published from the consumer website Comparitech examines the types of hacking services available on the dark web and sets their prices.

To conduct its analysis, Comparitech researchers looked at more than 100 lists of 12 different hacking services. Actual prices for many services are negotiated based on time, scope, complexity, and level of risk, according to Paul Bischoff, author of the post. But Comparitech still managed to find average prices for many of these illicit services. Selling prices are normally listed in bitcoin, which Comparitech converted to US dollars for its report.

The most expensive item on the menu was a personal attack, usually defamatory, legal sabotage, or financial interruption. Changing school grades was the next most expensive service. All hackers ask for upfront payment, although some promise a refund if the hack fails.

Most contract hackers will only take a job if they believe they can do it. A group found by Comparitech even states on its website: “In about 5-7% of cases, hacking is impossible.” Most hackers claim they can get the job done within 24 hours, although more advanced hacks could take days or weeks.

Personal attacks

Hackers who specialize in personal attacks sell their services for an average of $ 551. A personal attack could include financial sabotage, legal trouble, or public defamation. A tactic touted by a hacker is to frame the victim as a buyer of child pornography material. Some hackers offer services such as “scammer’s revenge” or “fraud monitoring” in which they will attack a scammer.

Change of rank

Students who want a higher grade can actually pay someone $ 526 on average to hack a school system and change their grades. Available for both elementary schools and universities, this is one of the most common hacking services and one of the most expensive. On the sidelines, some hackers also claim they can steal future exam answers.

Website hacking

Website hacking costs $ 394 on average and includes attacks against websites and other services hosted online. One group quoted by Comparitech claimed it could access an underlying web server or a website’s administrative panel. Another group touted that it could steal databases and administrative credentials.

Computer and phone hacking

A computer and phone hacking service costs an average of $ 343. In this type of attack, the hacker breaks into the victim’s PC or phone to steal data or distribute malware. The operating system doesn’t seem to matter as they pride themselves on being able to access Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, BlackBerry or Windows Phone.

Social media account hacking

Hacking a social media account costs $ 230 on average. In this service, the hacker spies or hijacks accounts from platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Skype, Telegram, TikTok, Snapchat and Reddit. Malicious activity depends on the service. Criminals who hack a victim’s Facebook or Twitter account often steal credentials to allow the buyer to access the account. Those who log into an account from WhatsApp are likely to spy on messages or take screenshots.

Email hacking

Email hacking sells for $ 241 on average. In this activity, the hacker steals the victim’s email password and then either gives it to the buyer or enters the account to access the data. In some cases, the offender may set up an email forwarding process to get a copy of all the victim’s emails.

DDoS attacks

Hackers offering Distributed Denial-of-Service attacks charge an average of $ 26 per hour, although prices vary based on the length and bandwidth of the attack. Some hackers will charge for the hour or even the month to maintain an attack for as long as the buyer wants.

In addition to the more expensive and traditional services, Comparitech said it found other, more niche services.

Some hackers will enter a hospital’s COVID-19 vaccine database to steal data or add their name to the database. Others will change search engine results to increase or decrease a site’s ranking. Some will remove a post the buyer made on a social network. And some hackers will check the security of a website, ostensibly to show the owner where any vulnerabilities exist.
