How to create a map in “Minecraft” to keep track of your location

The worlds of “Minecraft” are huge and it’s easy to get lost if you stray too far from your base. To keep yourself on track, you could erect headlights, use flashlights, or just draw a map.

You can create, trade or find maps all over your “Minecraft” world. These maps will help you understand where you are, where you have been and where you are headed. And once you have a map, you can even add your own custom markers, which is great for noting the coolest features of your land.

Here’s how to get your hands on a map in “Minecraft” and then use it.

How to create or find a map in “Minecraft”

There are three ways to get a map in “Minecraft:” create one, exchange one or find one in a chest.

Create a map

To make a map in Minecraft, you will need a compass and eight pieces of paper. Both the paper and the compass can be made from raw materials that you will mine and search for in your world.

First, paper. Paper is made with sugar cane, one of the most common resources around. Sugar cane grows near water in both swamps and desert biomes. Placing three pieces of sugar cane in a row on your work table will result in three pieces of paper. This means that you will need at least nine pieces of sugarcane for your map.

Second, a compass. You can make one of these with four iron ingots and a piece of red stone dust. You can easily find iron ore and red stone dust during mining, especially as you approach the bottom of the world. You will need an iron pickaxe or better to mine the red stone.

Once you have at least one piece of redstone dust and four blocks of iron ore, melt the ore into four iron ingots with a furnace. Then on a crafting table, place the four ingots in four spaces adjacent to the center block, where you will place the redstone dust.

Once you have your materials, you can finally create a map. Place the compass in the center slot in the 3 × 3 worktable area and insert a card into each of the other nine slots.

You now have a blank map, ready to be filled out.

Find a map

“Craft” is obviously in the name of the game for a reason: almost anything you use in the game can be created.

But you can also try your luck by acquiring an empty map in one of the chests in your world. Treasure chests in sunken wrecks have about an eight percent chance of holding a map; the chest in a fortress library has about 11% chance; and the cartographer’s trunk in a village has nearly a 50 percent chance.

That said, if you’ve managed to find a cartographer, you can also talk to them to purchase a map for seven or eight emeralds.

How to use a map in “Minecraft”

You now have an “empty map”, which is not particularly useful. Fortunately, it’s easy to fix.

Just equip and “use” the map to instantly draw a picture of everything around you. The game will now also assign a number to the map so that it will no longer be called empty.

As you walk with the map up, it will fill up more and more of your surroundings. You can trace yourself with the tiny white marker.

Obviously, your “Minecraft” world is bigger than the one shown on the map. Once out of its range, create a new map to keep following you or zoom out on the original map.

You can make your map smaller by combining it with eight other pieces of paper on a crafting table, or just another piece of paper on a mapping table. This can be done up to four times, and each zoom level doubles the current range of the map.
