Staying anonymous on WhatsApp is not an option, everyone can view your phone number and there is no way to hide it. Fortunately, there is a way to create a WhatsApp account without using your real phone numberso you can join any group or give your WhatsApp number to anyone without worrying about your number going public.
WhatsApp without number and sim is doable
While it is easy to create an account on WhatsApp, the important part is the verification process. WhatsApp sends you a verification code via SMS to your phone number. You have to enter that code in the app to complete the account setup. But we can get around this by using a temporary phone number.
You can create temporary phone numbers with apps like Text Now and Telos. While the Text Now app is great, it is only available in some countries such as United States, Canada, Kuwait, Singapore, etc. Telos works in many other countries.
Use WhatsApp without number with Telos
Step 1: Install the Telos app
To generate an alternate phone number, you need to install the Telos app ( Android / iOS ). Telos is also not available in all countries, if the app is not visible in the Play Store or App Store, it will most likely not work in your country. Either way, no matter what device you install the app on, all we need to do is generate the phone number and get the verification code.
Now launch the Telos app and we need to create an account to be able to use the app. You can use your email ID or Facebook account to create the account if you don’t want to use the phone number. Once finished, you can grant the application access to make and manage phone calls.
Step 2: Generate a phone number
Once done, creating an account, you need to select the country from which you want the number. It doesn’t matter which country you choose. Now select the respected country code, as I selected the United States, I entered the United States prefix. Now hit search.
Time to pick your number! Telos will generate a list of numbers to choose from. Select the one you like, then go ahead and hit “Continue”. Telos is a monthly subscription app and you get a 3-day free trial. However, it is not necessary to continue the subscription just to use Whatsapp. You can click on the free path for three days and complete the payment process to create a phone number. You will need a valid debit card saved in the Google Play Store payment options.
You will not be charged if you cancel your subscription before the trial period ends. However, it is not necessary to remain subscribed to use WhatsApp with that number. Once verification is complete, you can terminate your subscription, so this is a completely free option.
Step 3: Set up WhatsApp with that number
Install the WhatsApp app ( Android | iOS ) on the device. Go ahead and launch the app and tap “Accept and Continue”. Now change the country to match the country you have selected in the Telos app. Then enter the new alternate number in WhatsApp. Hit “Next” at the bottom once you’re done.
You will receive the verification code for the Telos app. But you need to wait for the WhatApp automatic verification to complete and manually enter the verification code. In case you get an error message saying “this is not a valid number for the US country”, in such cases, you can try to unsubscribe and start over.
Done, you have successfully created a WhatsApp account without using your phone number.
You can now cancel your subscription in the Telos app and WhatsApp will work as usual. You can even make phone and video calls from WhatsApp even after canceling. This is because WhatsApp uses the internet to make calls and not mobile networks.
Odd enough, unsubscribing on the Telos app is a bit buggy. But since we signed in with the help of the email, you can unsubscribe from here if you are using Gmail.
You can add contacts to your phone just like before and Whatsapp will read the contact data just like before. Anyway, in order to send regular SMS from the number you created, you must continue the subscription and you must also grant access to contacts for the Telos app.
