How to disable Siri and prevent the virtual assistant from listening to you

The virtual assistant Siri has been part of the iPhone’s operating system since 2011, about a year after Apple bought the voice assistant when it was just an app in the App Store. While they aren’t as capable as alternatives like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant yet, many people still find it useful to check their phone and get quick answers to questions. If you prefer your iPhone or iPad not to listen to your voice or you don’t want to give voice commands to your devices, it’s easy to turn off Siri with just a few taps in Settings.

How to disable Siri

You can completely disable Siri so that it doesn’t hear “Hey, Siri” and can’t be started by pressing the side button on your phone. Do this:

1. Launch the app Settings then tap Siri and Search .

2. Deactivate Listen to “Hey Siri” sliding the button to the left.

3. Deactivate Press the side button for Siri sliding the button to the left.

4. After disabling both of these settings, you will see the pop-up Turn off Siri. Touch Turn off Siri .

If you want to reactivate Siri, come back here and enable both of these settings. You will have to complete a very short setup process by repeating a few Siri commands so that your phone learns your voice.

How to turn off Siri Suggestions

If you find Siri occasionally useful but want to disable some or all of Siri’s suggestions, you can too. Go to Siri and Search in the app Settings , where you can turn off Siri Suggestions only while searching, such as on the lock screen or home screen. You can also disable Siri Suggestions within some apps.
