How to play Hagar.Io: definitive guide

Agarium or Agar.io – probably one of the simplest and most addicting time-wasting games on the internet right now.

If you haven’t tried the Chrome browser game yet, but have heard your friends excited, we have prepared a beginner’s guide of everything you need to know about the game, including how to play, tips and tricks to get ahead and where to find the best extensions, cheats, skins and Agario mods if you want to add them.

What is Agar.io?

As mentioned above, A.gario is a fairly simple and free browser-based game (best used in Chrome) that can be found at Agar.io. The game was created by a user on Steam called M28 and released somewhere in early May. It attracted the attention of thousands of players and even got the go free from Steam for further development.

How do you play Agario?

To play Agario, simply visit the Agar.io website, choose a username, and you’re out! PHOTO: AGAR.IO

So playing Agario is quite simple. Basically go to the web address Agar.io and select a username. After selecting one, you will land on a grid or board as a tiny colored blob. The object of the game is to consume the smaller pellets lying around to get bigger, avoiding the big blobs which, if they absorb you, are equivalent to GAME OVER man.

Once you start getting big enough, you will actually be able to start absorbing other smaller blob players out there all the while they get bigger and bigger. So, in a nutshell, eat and avoid getting eaten. The proverbial rat race at its best.

To control the game, simply use the mouse / track pad, the “w” key and the SPACEBAR. The mouse moves your blob around and the SPACEBAR allows you to split your cells in half and the “W” key allows you to eject the mass to feed other players, viruses or help you lose weight to get out of a hard spot (the smaller your blob, the faster it can move!)

Agario strategy, tips and tricks

Agario Tip No. 1: when you are little hide behind viruses to save your blob

So while you are small, you will often see the larger, more aggressive blobs come up behind you to eat you. If one is on your tail and you think you can’t escape, but there’s a virus nearby, that might be your best hope of survival. Big blobs don’t like viruses, because once a blob is bigger than the virus, the virus can split it into pieces if they collide. By hiding your blob behind the virus, you will keep larger aggressive blobs away from you.

Agario Tip No. 2: use edges and corners to your advantage

Agario has edges. Pushing your opponent towards them can help you move forward.PHOTO: AGAR.IO

The Agario playing space has its limits and if you know where they are you can use them to trap or corner your opponent. If you put a smaller blob on the edge of the game, you will be able to absorb it easily because it will have nowhere to escape.

Agario Tip No. 3: use viruses to divide opponents

Viruses, as previously mentioned, have the power to split a larger blob into small pieces if it has been fed. If you have an opponent you are trying to take down, feeding a virus could be helpful. Just shoot by pressing the “w” key 7 times in the direction of the virus and when it encounters the blob you were fighting with it has the potential to shrink it.

Agario Tip No. 4: When you’re huge and hunting, it’s a good idea to split

As mentioned at the beginning, the bigger you are, the slower you move. If you’re on the hunt for blobs and have grown quite large, it’s a good strategy to split up to travel faster and absorb smaller blobs nearby.

For the more advanced players….

Reddit offers these tips for Agario players who have passed the beginner stage

When you’re at 200-300 here are some tips:

  • If you have your cell in one piece, try to capture small cells with room to be fed faster.
  • Try not to have more than 2 cells, you will be much more vulnerable.
  • The most likely way to get big right now is to eat a large cell that has been divided too much (start by eating a small piece and you will be able to eat it all).
  • A little trick that has helped me a lot when I’m trapped by a larger cell near the border is to pretend to go in one direction for 0.5 seconds and then go the other direction. The larger cell is slower and you need to take advantage of it.

When you are at the top

  • You often hit space when there are a bunch of central cells fighting for a destroyed upper cell.
  • Be really careful with viruses, that’s your worst enemy. If you get hit with one, try to protect the small pieces with the large ones. In other situations, you will need to do your important part to minimize your losses.
  • When another cell is slightly smaller than yours, try to abuse corners / edges or use other large cells to trap it. When you are trying to eat it in a corner, move “ahead”, you will be a little slower, so if you are going to the lower right corner and you are in the upper left, go down and not to the right (you will start right at the end of the race) because you have to shorten the exit path.
  • Make the most of a bad situation. Sometimes you will have to give up. Press space to save as much as possible.
