How to save a chart as a picture in Excel

Charts are ideal for visualizing data. If you only want to save the chart you create and email it or share it as a photo, here’s how to save a chart as a picture in Microsoft Excel.

What’s great about charts and graphs is that they can tell a clear story about your data. Many times it is not necessary to share an entire spreadsheet to show sales, income and expenses, or family budget.

By simply saving the chart as a picture in Excel, you can use it however you like. Send it in an email, put it in a text message or paste it on social media.

Export an Excel chart as an image

Open the spreadsheet in Excel and right-click on the chart you want to save as an image. Select “Save as Image” from the context menu.

When the Save As Image window opens, select the location where you want to save the image. Then, give your image a filename. You can also use the “Save as type” drop-down box to choose the image format as PNG or JPEG.

Choose a location, name and file type

Click “Save” and your chart is now a reusable image. If you are making a presentation, you may want to add the image to a PowerPoint presentation.

Saving charts as images in Excel for the web

The instructions above work in Microsoft Excel on both Mac and Windows. Unfortunately, Excel for the web doesn’t currently offer this capability. One option is to copy the chart by right clicking and selecting “Copy”, then pasting it into another application.

If the application you are using does not accept the chart as an image, another option is to take a screenshot of the chart in the Excel sheet.
