How to unblock someone on Instagram

Have you accidentally blocked someone on Instagram? Maybe you blocked your boss or wanted to block someone from receiving notifications on your Instagram posts, but just for a while?

There are many reasons to block and just as many to unblock someone on Instagram. Regardless of your motives, the steps you need to take to unlock are easy.

These instructions apply to the latest version of the Instagram mobile app and desktop website.

How to unblock someone on the Instagram app

To remove someone from your Instagram blocked list using the Instagram app for all supported versions of iOS (iPad and iPhone), Android (Samsung, Google, etc.) and Windows:

  1. Find the blocked user on Instagram.

You can use the card ACCOUNT from the search bar to isolate the search for user accounts only.

  2. Tap the profile you want to unlock.

  3. Touch Unlock and confirm that you really want to unblock the user.

You can now see the user’s profile where you can choose to follow him if you want.

Unblock someone using Instagram on the web

  4. Tap any blocked user to access their profile, where you can unblock them using the instructions above.

What happens when you unblock someone

When you unblock an account on Instagram, the restrictions associated with blocking someone are lifted.

  • They can find you of new using Instagram search.
  • Can see your posts and stories again .
  • They can follow you of new (this will not happen automatically, however).
  • Can send to you again private messages using Instagram Direct.

The user will not be notified when you unlock it.

If you’ve previously allowed direct messages from the user, you’ll also receive any messages they’ve sent in the meantime. If you haven’t exchanged direct messages with them, the user’s first message after unblocking them will only appear as a request in Instagram Direct.

How to follow an unblocked Instagram account

If you have blocked someone on Instagram, you have also unfollowed them and new posts or stories will not appear in your Instagram stream. Also, you can’t follow a blocked account until you’ve unblocked it.

To follow the user again after unlocking them:

  1. Search and open the user profile on Instagram.

It works in Instagram apps for iOS and Android as well as on the web.

  2. Select follow .

Unblock someone who has also blocked you

Trying to unblock someone who in turn blocked you on Instagram can be a frustrating and, alas, usually pointless experience. This is because you are prevented from seeing the account and need to access the account menu to unlock it.

The best solution is an @mention, for example in a private message to that user from your account:

  1. Tap the icon of Instagram Direct (paper airplane) in Instagram for iOS or Android.

  2. Touch the icon from the pencil to start a new message.

  3. Type your Instagram username in TO select your account from the list, then tap Chat .

  4. In the message field, type @ followed by the username of the account you want to unblock.

For example, for the user barackobama, type: @barackobama .

  5. Touch Send .

  6. Now tap the username highlighted in the message you just sent.

  7. Open the menu of the user profile ( ··· on iOS and on Android).

  8. Select Unlock from the displayed menu and confirm your choice. If the person has changed their username since you blocked them, you won’t be able to unblock them using this method.

If the direct message trick doesn’t work for you, here are some other ways you can try to access the account you want to unlock:

  • Search on Instagram.
  • Type the direct profile page address (https://www.instagram.com/username) into a web browser.
  • Find a post from them that you liked.
  • Find a photo or video that you have privately saved in your account or in a collection.

The above methods may be inaccessible depending on the app and platform you are using.

Can you unlock accounts that no longer exist?

Depending on the app or website, it may not be possible to unblock Instagram profiles that have been deleted or removed since you blocked them. Their names will appear in the list of blocked accounts with no way to interact with them.

If possible, try the Instagram app on a different platform. We have seen Instagram for Android able to unblock users that the Instagram website and iOS app have reported as non-existent or inaccessible.

One thing you can do to avoid outdated accounts in Instagram’s blocked accounts list is to report suspicious accounts and activity to Instagram ( Report > It is spam or Report > It is inappropriate in the user menu) instead of blocking users who you think are fake accounts.
