How to use the best emojis and emoticons of Facebook chat

Facebook smileys and emojis have gotten easier to use over the years as the social network has added clickable menus that make it easy for users to insert funny faces, symbols, and objects without having to know any code. There is now a huge menu full of emojis that you can choose from when making status updates, posting comments, and chatting in private messages.

These instructions apply to the desktop and mobile versions of Facebook.

How to add Facebook emojis to a status update

Facebook has a drop-down menu for emojis in the status post box.

  1. Start by composing a new Facebook status update. Click inside section A what are you thinking? status box and enter what you want to include in the update or leave it blank if you want to send emojis only.

  2. Click on the icon Smiley face at the bottom right of the update status area to open a new menu.

  3. Select any emoji you want to include in your Facebook status. You can click on each category at the bottom of the menu to quickly switch to other emoji types or scroll through the huge list and take your time to choose your favorites.

  4. When you’re done adding emojis to the text box, click the smiley face to close the menu and continue updating your post if you wish by adding text behind or in front of any emoji.

  5. When you’re done, click the button Publish to post the emoji and your status update for all your Facebook friends to see.

Facebook’s mobile app doesn’t support emojis exactly like the ones you see in the desktop version. However, most phones have built-in support for emojis. Look for a smiley face next to the space bar on your keyboard. Tap it to search and insert an emoji on your mobile device.

  1. Touch to open the conversation in which you want to use an emoji or start a new one.

  2. Choose the small Smiley Face icon to the right of the text box.

  3. In the new menu that shows below the text box, go to the tab EMOJI . The first page of the EMOJI tab shows the recently used emojis. Swipe right to see all options.

More image sharing options

When you post a status update on Facebook, there’s a menu of items just below the text box and emoji menu that might interest you.

Most of these options have nothing to do with emojis and allow you to do things like tag friends in the post, start a survey, and check in at a nearby location.

However, if you want to post an image instead of a small emoticon-like icon, use the button Photo / Video . Likewise, the option GIF This is useful if you want to add them to your status update instead of an emoji or in addition to an emoji.

If you are using the Facebook mobile app, find the option Feeling / Activity under the status text box or the Smiley Face icon next to the comment text box to insert those kinds of icons and images if your device doesn’t support the emoji you are looking for.
