How to use the password checker tool on Android
How secure are your passwords? You probably know that you should create strong passwords and never reuse them on different websites and services. If you store passwords in Chrome on your desktop, you may know that your browser has a built-in password checker.
Google has now added the password checking tool also for Android.
What to know about Google Password Checker for Android devices
Google Password Checkup it’s built into your Android phone as long as you’re using Android 9 or later and it’s built into your Google AutoFill settings, which means if you’re using a different service to auto-fill passwords (like Dashlane or Bitwarden) it won’t work.
Password Checker is designed to protect you by comparing your stored passwords to an online database of known data breaches and exposed passwords. Whenever you enter or save a password, verify your entry and if a match is found, your phone will show you a warning and advise you to change your password. You can also manually review all stored passwords and perform a password check as well.
For the safety and security of your passwords, they are never transmitted to the cloud in the clear. Instead, Google only uploads encrypted versions of your passwords to compare your passwords to its online security database, and the actual determination if your credentials have been compromised takes place locally on your phone, not in the cloud.
