“Red Notice,” Netflix’s new high-budget action film, is breaking records for the streamer after debuting on Friday.
On Tuesday, Netflix said the film was viewed for 148.72 million hours Friday through Sunday, making it the company’s largest opening weekend for a film and that it ranked # 1 in more than 90 countries during the end. week.
Netflix said in its third quarter earnings report that it would start reporting watch hours for its titles rather than its previous metric of the number of members who watched. Previously, a view counted if an account watched at least two minutes of a show or movie.
On Tuesday, the streamer launched a new website, top10.netflix.com which will update weekly on Tuesdays with the top 10 lists of the previous week’s most viewed movies and TV shows based on watch hours.
“Bird Box” is Netflix’s most viewed movie based on viewing time with 282 million hours watched in its first month (“Extraction” is its largest movie based on number of households, with 99 million hours watched in the first month).
But based on the opening weekend of “Red Notice”, it looks like he’s on track to beat “Bird Box”.
Critics have not been kind to the film and it has a 36% Rotten Tomatoes critical rating. But it received an audience rating of 92%.
“‘Red Notice’ is weak and boring, and does more to show the shortcomings of each of its main idols than to highlight their bankable charisma,” wrote Richard Lawson for Vanity Fair .
Variety reported in 2019 that the “Red Notice” budget could reach $ 200 million, which would make it Netflix’s most expensive film ever (IMDb lists the $ 160 million production budget).
Stars Ryan Reynolds and Gal Gadot received $ 20 million each, while Dwayne Johnson earned more as both star and producer on the film, according to Variety.
