Telegram: how to prevent taking screenshots of your messages

If you are looking for the best messaging app, Telegram must be at the top of the list. It lacks some security features compared to Signal, but the developers have made great strides to make your conversations as private as possible, even if you’re using your favorite Android phone. This includes preventing people from saving or taking a screenshot of your messages in the app.

How to prevent people from saving or taking a screenshot of your texts on Telegram

  2. Tap the icon of pencil in the lower right corner.

Once the self-destruct timer is set, a message confirming the duration of the timer will appear. From here, Telegram says that while it can’t completely prevent taking screenshots, it will notify you via a notification if the person attempts to take one.

While there is another method to prevent people from saving or taking screenshots of your Telegram texts, it only applies to your phone and cannot block anything on the other side of the conversation.

  1. Open the app Telegram.
  2. Touch the hamburger icon in the upper left corner.
  3. From the pop-up menu, tap Settings .
  4. In the section Settings touch Privacy and security .Telegram: how to prevent taking screenshots of your messagesTelegram: how to prevent taking screenshots of your messagesTelegram: how to prevent taking screenshots of your messages

Under the option in the Settings app, Telegram describes what happens:

If disabled, you will not be able to take screenshots in the app, but the chat content will be hidden in the activity selector.

Going forward, if you (or anyone else uses your phone) try to take a screenshot, a message will appear at the bottom stating “Unable to take a screenshot due to security policy”. This just adds another layer of security to protect your messages from saving without your permission.

The process of attempting to stop people from taking screenshots is a little more in-depth than if you were to use Signal. However, if you use Telegram, you have the added advantage of being able to keep your conversations protected by a passcode or your fingerprint scanner.
