The Eternals director reveals the backstory of Eros, Thanos’ brother

This year will be marked as one of the biggest for Marvel as it has seen the greatest variety of projects come to them. The most exciting project was certainly Eternals even though it received mixed reviews. There is a lot that this film has unveiled and actually pointed out considering what might be waiting for the franchise itself.

But one of the biggest surprises was definitely the film’s ending with the post-credits sequences. While the credits scene actually suggested the new character joining the franchise, but the credits scene actually created more for the Eternals themselves. With the addition of Harry Styles as Eros to the MCU, there was a lot of confusion regarding the character’s story. eternal director Chloé Zhao provided context for Eros’s backstory in the MCU.

Fans had already found out that Harry Styles was part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe before seeing Eternals. There was a lot of hype about the film, considering it would give us an insight into the mythology of the entire franchise. The film provided some space for the franchise’s background, but there was also a reference to what we will see in the franchise in the future. This includes the fact that the film’s post-credits scene showed what else could be in store for the Eternals in the upcoming MCU.

The credits scene featured Harry Styles as Eros along with his trusty companion Pip the Troll in the ship of the Eternals. They said that they too were Eternals and intend to help our heroes find other Eternals like that and they also said that the Eternals on Earth are now in danger. While this surprised the audience, it also left us with a lot of questions about the franchise. These questions were mainly about what will be the story behind the Eros character who already has some history in the MCU. Eros is actually Thanos’ brother and taking him inside leads to a lot of storylines in the MCU’s narrative thus far.

The background of Eros in Eternals

In an interview with Empire the director of Eternals Chloé Zhao talked about how she envisioned the new Eros character played by Harry Styles. In your opinion:

For me, the backstory of Eros is that he deserted, he said, “I don’t do that anymore.” So somehow he took that orb, which you saw in his hand, and ran away and made Pip the troll. They are like Han Solo and Chewie. Arishem is looking for him and he’s just a space outlaw. This is the character I had in mind. But I’ve never once said to Kevin, ‘Here’s the character. Let’s find an actor ». For me it was a package. It must be Harry. That’s how I proposed it to Kevin [Feige] [presidente dei Marvel Studios]”.

When asked why she intended to bring Eros to the MCU, she replied:

I can tell you why! Long story short, with that depressing ending, at some point he would become one of the Eternals on that ship. And that didn’t work. But I wanted to bring Eros to the MCU. So I kept talking to Kevin about it [Feige] whenever I get the chance in the corridor, because I like the idea that Eros is another Eternal, another Ajak. He is an Eternal, and he was stationed on Titan – 10 of them were, just like the 10 Eternals on Earth, assuming Titan is also a host planet at some point. Now, if you think about it, what influence could Eros have had on the inhabitants of Titan, in the way Ajak influenced people on Earth? And how did this affect Thanos?

The director’s biggest revelation has to be the fact that Eros created life forms himself with Pip the Troll being his own creation. This could change many aspects of the character and the way we were drawing parallels for him from the comics. But this was completely expected considering Pip has a history all his own. The comics have never indicated a connection with Eros, so it’s clear the MCU is heading differently than the comics. A future project working on these characters may well look at these arcs and give us a better idea of how they work in the MCU.

Eternals will be available on the Disney + streaming platform on January 12, 2022.
