“AMA” is an acronym that stands for “ask me anything”. When used as a noun, an AMA refers to a type of informal interview in which the interviewee opens the word to the general public, allowing the audience to ask them anything they want to know.
AMAs are generally conducted online on various social media sites, where questions can be easily submitted via comments.
Where are the online AMAs located
AMAs are found on many social media sites – if you follow people with a large fan base, chances are you’ve seen someone conduct an AMA before. AMAs are occasionally hosted on Twitter, YouTube, and streaming sites like Twitch, but the easiest and most common place to find them is Reddit’s r / IAmA subreddit.
On r / IAmA, anyone can post their AMA, and other Reddit users can ask any questions they want. Sometimes these AMAs are planned in advance for the purpose of promoting specific projects, often with a celebrity attached.
A notorious example is Woody Harrelson’s Reddit AMA in 2012. This AMA was received negatively by many Reddit users because Harrelson mainly wanted to talk about his upcoming movie and was not receptive to receiving “something”.
Many AMAs are just ordinary people who post their experiences to satisfy the curiosity of others. Topics covered range from completely mundane (“I’m a used car salesman, AMA”) to extraordinary (“I grew up in a cult, AMA”).
Why are AMAs popular?
AMAs are attractive for many different reasons, but mostly due to their personal nature. Traditional interviews are conversations between an interviewer and the interviewee, with the questions usually checked in advance. Conversely, AMAs open the conversation to anyone on a widely accessible platform like Reddit, so the questions and answers become much more varied and diverse, creating a unique experience for both the interviewee and their audience.
AMAs also offer a greater breadth of respondents, since anyone can post one – you don’t need to be a well-known person to conduct a great AMA and satisfy people’s curiosity. People who otherwise would never have interacted can engage in fascinating conversations on topics they may never have considered before.
