What does the “This person is not available on Messenger” error mean and how to fix it

Despite its popularity, Facebook can be very vague when it comes to explaining why its apps don’t work properly. You can’t contact Facebook directly, which means relying on the platform’s Support Center for help.

But not all error messages are listed in the Help Center. For example: What does it mean when the Messenger app tells you “This person is not available on Messenger?”

Here is a complete guide on what the error message means and how to fix it if you think something is wrong.

What does “This person is not available on Messenger” mean?

If you see this message in your conversation with someone on Messenger, it means you can’t chat with them, of course. But what causes it?

There are some common reasons.

  • The person you’re trying to contact has blocked you, either on Messenger or on Facebook as a whole. If you’re not sure if you’ve been blocked, check out our article on how to decipher the signs of a Facebook block.
  • The person has disabled or deleted their Messenger account.
  • The person has been banned or suspended from Facebook or Messenger.

The error “This person is not available on Messenger” may appear when one of these occurs. And unfortunately, there’s no way around it on your own – you’ll need to get the person you want to chat with to unblock you or create a new Messenger account.

At least, assuming there wasn’t just a glitch. If you see the error message but you’re sure you’re not locked out and your friend is still on Messenger, try logging out and logging back into your account. If that doesn’t work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the Messenger app. This may solve the problem.
