What happened to Voldemort’s nose?

Lord Voldemort has earned a huge reputation in the franchise of Harry Potter as an evil leader with cruel tactics and deadly intentions to the point that the mere mention of his name keeps the entire wizarding world on its toes. Also, his inner cold is only exacerbated by his terrifying outward appearance. Voldemort’s bizarre appearance undoubtedly strikes fear in the hearts of many, with his sharp teeth, sunken eyes, and pale face giving him a presence that is nothing short of menacing. The Dark Lord’s most intimidating feature is undoubtedly the exclusion of his nose, which actually consists of two small snake-like nostrils in place of a common schnoz.

Despite his odd appearance, Voldemort didn’t always resemble a snake. In fact, when he was still Tom Riddle, he appeared to be a relatively normal looking human being. However, Riddle had already begun to experience dark magic and evil powers that would help him later in his life during his time as a student at Hogwarts. Over time, he went from being a handsome pupil to the mighty Dark Lord with no real nose ⏤ but how, and why?

What happened to Voldemort’s nose?

Over the course of the gripping films of Harry Potter , many fans have theorized the various possibilities. One possibility is that Voldemort’s human aspect began to diminish during the formation of the Horcruxes. This theory suggests that every time he created a new Horcrux, that specific Horcrux diminished a part of his soul. Thus, his nose began to sink, until it disappeared completely. Due to his tampering with dark magic, the human aspect of him has evolved into a more snake-like state. Experimenting more with the Dark Arts has drastically distorted the appearance of him over the years. The physical aspect of him in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone for example, it is quite different than it appears in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 .

Other fans have speculated that a potion given to Voldemort by Wormtail, aka Peter Minus, caused the Dark Lord’s nose to deteriorate. This theory holds that Minus gave a potion consisting of unicorn blood and Nagini poison to Voldemort in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire when it was shaped like a small creature. The sole purpose of this potion was to allow Voldemort to return to human physical form; however, Voldemort required more to achieve this transformation successfully. Therefore, the potion is believed to have forever altered his appearance, mirroring his menacing descent into the Dark Arts.
