What is Ninite and how is it used?

Ninite is an easy-to-use online service that allows users to install multiple software programs on a computer at the same time.

It does this by using a program you download first and managing apps from that, rather than doing it all by yourself. The app installer is a quick and easy way to download applications in bulk reliably and securely.

Ninite only works on a Windows machine.

Why use Ninite?

Most of us have installed various forms of software on our computers, from voice and video calling solutions like Skype or WhatsApp to antivirus and security programs. Then there are the internet browsers, like Chrome or Firefox. In general, we install individual programs one by one, and while setting up each program is not complicated, it is a time-consuming exercise. Enter Ninite, a tool that was explicitly designed to install multiple applications at the same time.

The applications are installed from their respective websites, making sure you get the latest official versions. Any optional adware at download is ignored and blocked by Ninite, using the option to deselect suspicious adware or extensions during the installation process. Ninite also applies any software updates in a timely and efficient manner; it is no longer necessary to update installed programs one at a time. Not all programs are available for installation via Ninite, but it’s worth checking if it meets your needs.

Ninite is a full-featured app installer with the following benefits:

  • Automatically install applications using default settings in default locations.
  • Ignore and deselect any adware, ensuring it avoids installation with the application.
  • Automatically detects 64 or 32-bit systems and installs the relevant program.
  • The applications are automatically installed in the language of the computer.
  • The latest version is always downloaded from their official sites along with any updates.
  • Existing installed applications are ignored unless they need to be updated and all restart requests are performed.
  • Easy to use and runs the installation process when Ninite is downloaded.

Each installation of Ninite is marked with an installation ID, which is used to ensure that only the latest version of the application is installed. In Ninite Pro, you can lock the installed version of the application using a lock switch . The Pro version also has a download cache which skips the download phase and completes the installation process faster.

The list of applications that can be downloaded and installed from Ninite is complete and free. Applications are grouped under specific headings: Messages, Media, Developer Tools, Imaging, Security, and more. There is a list of apps that can be installed on the Ninite website, such as Chrome, Skype, iTunes, PDFCreator, Foxit Reader, Dropbox, OneDrive and Spotify, just to name a few. Ninite and Ninite Pro list a lot of programs that can be installed. If Ninite doesn’t list the app you are looking for, you can submit a request for adding a particular application via their suggestion form.

Once applications are installed, Ninite can be set to automatically update installed applications at regular intervals as long as you have an Internet connection. So, make sure your system’s applications are always the latest version available without you having to make any effort. App updates and patches can be manually checked, set automatically, “locked” in Ninite Pro so that the current version is not changed or updated manually.

More on the update

If an installed app needs to be repaired, Ninite allows the app to be reinstalled via the retry / reinstall link. Your software apps can be managed via a live web interface. Apps can be individually selected for update, installation or uninstallation as a bulk action or individually. The instruction can be sent to offline machines via the web interface, which will be activated once the machine is online. However, Ninite is unable to update running apps. Apps that need updating must be closed manually before the update can be triggered.
