If you suddenly find that your AirPods aren’t charging, it doesn’t matter how good their sound quality is.
Fortunately, there are some easy ways to fix your AirPods if they aren’t charging.
Here’s what you need to know.
Stop using non-Apple charging cables
Charging problems can arise when using non-branded cables, such as the colorful varieties found in grocery stores or online.
While these cables may be cheaper and even look sturdier, they tend to break more often than standard Apple-brand charging cables.
Charging cables Apple they are always white and are made of smooth plastic, not fabric. A cable comes with every Apple device you buy, including your AirPods.
You can purchase these official cables directly from Apple’s website.
Check the charger cable connection
If you need to use a third-party charging cable, make sure it’s working properly. Use it to charge another device, like a friend’s AirPods or your iPhone. If it works, then we know the charging cable is still working.
Plug it into the charging case of your AirPods and make sure the connection on both ends is secure.
If nothing happens, unplug the Lightning end of the cable (the part that connects to the charging case), flip it over and plug it back in.
Also check that the wall outlet is firmly connected to the wall outlet or power strip.
Check your power outlet
If these other solutions don’t work, you may actually have a bad or shorted socket.
Check that your power outlet is working. Test the plug with a device that usually charges normally – if it’s still charging, you know the plug is working.
You should also try plugging the device and cord into another outlet, ideally in another room or on another power strip. If it works, the problem was with your old outlet.
Check your wireless charging pad
First of all, make sure you’re using a version of the AirPods that supports wireless charging: 2nd generation AirPods or AirPods Pro.
Also remember that your AirPods still need to be in their charging case and that the case must be placed on the wireless charging pad with the status light facing up.
The status light should go on for a few seconds, then go off while charging.
If the light never appears, you may have to fiddle with the position of the case on the pad.
If the case still won’t charge, try using the Lightning to USB cable that came with the case.
Connect your case to the phone
Unlike an iPhone, it’s a bit more complicated to check if your Airpods are charging.
Place your AirPods in the charging case and make sure you close the lid. Then, with a working charger and outlet, charge both the AirPods and the case for a minimum of 15 minutes.
Leaving your AirPods inside, check the charge status by opening the lid and bringing the case closer to your iOS device. Make sure the devices are paired.
You should see an image of your AirPods and the charging case appear at the bottom of the screen.
