Why is my Alexa flashing green, red, orange, and yellow?

You’ve installed one of Amazon’s Echo smart speakers and it’s very useful for playing music, checking the time, setting an egg timer, all hands-free. But then it starts blinking in different colors at random moments: red, green, yellow, orange… it’s almost like it’s trying to communicate with you. Which, in fact, it is.

When your Echo speaker makes your LED flash, there’s a really easy way to figure out what it wants. Just say “Alexa, what does your light mean?” But this would be a really short blog. So, for those of us who don’t like talking to our smart speakers, I’ve created this short cheat sheet to explain what all those flashing lights mean.

The LED light is the Alexa status and notification indicator. Depending on the device you own, the LED light will be in a different position. For example, on the new Echo and Echo Dot, it’s a ring at the bottom; on Echo Studio, it’s a top link; and on Echo Show smart displays, it appears as a line at the bottom of the screen.

Wherever he is, most of the time he is walking around doing nothing. But when you see it pulsing, twirling or spinning, Alexa is listening to you or trying to tell you something. Here’s what she wants her to know:

Alexa blinks yellow

A slow yellow “blast” every few seconds means your Alexa voice assistant has something to tell you. Ask: “Alexa, what are my notifications? Or “Alexa, what are my messages?” and all will be revealed.

Alexa blinks blue

A cyan reflector on a blue ring means Alexa heard you – the cyan reflector will actually point in the direction she heard your voice. Then it will spin while she processes your request. If it is spinning while you are not talking to it, it means that the device is starting up.

Alexa blinks red

If the ring is solid red, it means the speaker’s microphone is muted and cannot hear you. Press the mute button to reopen those microphones.

Alexa blinks orange

A swirling orange light indicates the Echo speaker is in setup mode or trying to connect to the Internet. An orange line on a smart display such as an Echo Show means it is trying to connect to the internet but is currently offline.

Alexa blinks green

The pulsing green on an echo tells you that someone is calling you. It should be accompanied by an announcement of who is calling. Say “Alexa, answer” to connect to the call (assuming you want to answer). During the call, the green light starts to turn until the call ends. A rotating green light will also appear if you are in a “Drop-In” with another speaker on your network.

Alexa blinks purple

A purple ring or line indicates that Do Not Disturb is enabled on the speaker. This blocks notifications, calls and messages, but not alarms, timers or reminders. It will flash purple when you ask it to do something. You can ask Alexa to turn off Do Not Disturb or to do it manually in the Alexa App. If it turns purple during device setup, it was unable to connect to Wi-Fi during setup (unlike the attempt connection, represented by orange).

Alexa blinks white

A white light moving up or down (or around) indicates that you are adjusting the volume on your device or app. A rotating white light indicates that Alexa Guard is on and set to Away mode. You can go to the app and change it to Home Mode or say “Alexa, I’m home”.

How to stop Alexa from blinking (a lot)

If the constant blinking bothers you (which is very likely if you are using the device as a smart alarm clock near your bed), you can turn off all notifications except the essential ones:

  • Go to the Alexa app.
  • Tap More> Settings> Device settings> [nome del tuo oratore] > Communications
  • Disable communications.

This will only stop the yellow and green rings from flashing, which are also the most likely to flash. But it will also disable Drop In and Announcements (where you can talk to an Echo in your home and everyone else will broadcast the message) and will keep flashing if there’s a problem.
